Nanjing Soap

This project draws inspiration from the bricks of Nanjing’s Ming City Wall, aiming to reconstruct the tactile and emotional memory of history through packaging design. Recycled pulp is molded to simulate the texture of aged bricks, inviting tactile engagement that evokes reflection on the city’s cultural heritage. Each brick of the Ming City Wall bears inscriptions—some record the names and hometowns of donors from different counties, while others feature auspicious phrases or place names such as "Fortune from the East Sea," "Longevity as the Southern Mountains," and "Jinling."
Using these inscriptions as a cultural medium, the design extracts visual elements and fuses them with the square structure of Chinese characters to construct a custom brand typeface with strong regional identity. Additionally, the names of the thirteen ancient city gates of Nanjing are revived and incorporated into the packaging, forming a narrative visual network. Each product becomes a symbolic “brick,” carrying fragments of history and storytelling.
This project challenges conventional impressions of soap packaging by bridging functionality with cultural storytelling. It transforms the surface of the product into a medium of cultural transmission, merging visual systems, material language, and local typography to encourage renewed appreciation for time-honored brands and awaken emotional resonance toward the preservation of historical sites such as the city wall.
