In today's society, the divorce rate is increasing and single-parent families are becoming the norm. During their youth, children in single-parent families often fail to understand their parents' child-rearing practices and have communication issues with their parents. Communication barriers are especially likely between sons and mothers due to physical and psychological factors. The mother's nagging voice is often met by the son's silent back. The most response some mothers get are replies like, “You’re so annoying!” "Okay! I got it,” ''OK," and other impatient retorts. Any ordinary person would be furious, but mothers receive such responses from their children again and again, yet still care wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, the special way their mothers treat them has never crossed the minds of adolescent children. This work is the artist's reflection on his adolescent self in his twenties, contrasting children’s inability to express themselves or ambiguous speech with a mother's concern and reasonableness, thus showing the greatness of the mother's love, and more importantly, the gratitude and filial piety that the artist wants to express to his mother.
This work originates from the 30 to 40 emails and handwritten letters sent between mother and son during the 3 to 4 years the artist was pursuing a college education away from home. The overlapping of the letters represents the interweaving of memories, the stacking of time, and the complex emotional link between mother and child. The inspiration for this work comes from the artist's personal experience.
